Working with the Tourism Northern Territory, Tourism Central Australia, Northern Territory Heritage Commission, Office of Aboriginal Affairs and Central Land Council, we:
- undertook extensive consultation with local Aboriginal people;
- conducted product audits and determined product gaps;
- developed draft product development strategies and concepts for major product proposals;
- developed a Masterplan for the region;
- priced the major development proposals; and
- set up scope of work to conduct a feasibility study / business case for the Cultural Campground.
Some of the product development strategies that we concepted and costed included:
- The development of a new campground at Ntaria with a cultural focus, including:
- a Tourist Information Centre to book tour experiences and a cultural retail outlet for local artists;
- a café selling good coffee, and a kiosk;
- safari tents to provide camping for 2WD travellers;
- cabins to provide hard roofed, air conditioned accommodation;
- powered sites for the caravan and campervan touring markets; and
- unpowered sites for the campers seeking greater level of comfort from national park sites.
- The development of Aboriginal guided brumby tours run by local community members
- Development of Aboriginal guided 4WD tours to Palm Valley and along the Finke River
- The development of Aboriginal guided storytelling at the Hermannsburg Precinct
- Development of walking trails along the Finke River
- Create the Tnorala Aboriginal Starlight Storytelling Experience
- Conservation and revitalisation works at the historic Hermannsburg site
- Capacity building initiatives to support the local community develop and manage tourism.
We also worked with the local land corporation and Indigenous Business Australia to develop a governance and funding model to develop a new integrated model for Aboriginal tourism development, that would progressively train, employ and grow local Aboriginal people into tourism delivery and management roles.
Following on from our work, the Northern Territory subsequently invested $600,000 and then $3M into implementation of the Strategies at Hermannsburg.
