Peak Hill is the northern gateway to the Parkes Shire and the second largest town in the municipality, situated on the Newell Highway approximately 48km north of Parkes. Peak Hill is a historic village, first settled in the 1840s as a grazing area, and in the 1890s growing rapidly with the discovery of gold, with the population increasing to over 10,000 people. Once the gold was exhausted the population declined with Peak Hill becoming a wheat producing area.
Working for the Parkes Shire Council, with our Associates Thompson Berrill Landscape Design, we prepared a Master Plan to reinvigorate the Peak Hill attraction. This work included:
- A Situation Analysis, investigating existing brand, marketing, visitor markets, accommodation performance and unmet visitor needs
- A Development framework, featuring target markets, Statement of cultural significance, interpretation themes, and positioning
- Concept options to reinvigorate the site
- Site access plan, new entry plan and concept drawings for new developments
- Works and Costing Proposal
- Implementation plan
The options concepted included: a themed mine playground, hands on interactive mining experience, slot stope experience, climbing wall, bush tucker trails, new interpretation sign and sculpture walk and a luge event.
The Master Plan is being progressively implemented by the Parkes Shire Council.
