This month Newcastle received funding to develop a new cruise terminal. Great news, but another example of how long it takes to get projects to design stage, let alone opening.
Simon McArthur (now SMA Tourism) worked on the first feasibility study for a new cruise terminal in 2009. The Study evaluated three alternative locations for the terminal, and recommended redeveloping the current location at ‘Channel Berth’, to be able to receive bigger vessels and provide a more professional and comfortable transit service.
Eight years later, the funding has been secured for a $12.7 million cruise terminal, funded by the NSW Government.
Construction will start in 2018 and is forecast to be completed end of the same year! So seven years to plan and get funding, one year to build – that’s actually pretty good!
