Karl joined SMA Tourism in 2014 to lead tourism market analysis, economic impact assessment and policy design, and he is based in Melbourne, Australia. Karl has 25 years’ experience as a tourism industry specialist working as a Tourism & Aviation Economist and acting Director Strategy and Research for Tourism Australia, General Manager Policy and Research for Australia’s peak tourism body (Tourism Transport Forum), Director Investment for Australia’s Commonwealth Department of Tourism, and Director, Service Industry Policy for Australia’s Department of Industry and Commerce.

Karl plays a major and continuous role in SMA Tourism conducting market analysis, tourism forecasting, economic impact assessment, providing policy advice and project management. He has co-developed over 10 feasibility assessments and business cases for tourism developments in Rwanda, the Kimberley and Busselton Jetty (Western Australia), Shepparton and the Great Ocean Road (Victoria), Blue Mountains (New South Wales), Wallaman Falls (Queensland) and numerous destinations in the Northern Territory. Karl also plays a key role in tourism planning and Destination Management Planning, with experience across Uganda, the Solomon Islands, Hokkaido (Japan), Melbourne’s Docklands, the Great Ocean Road, Canberra, North-West Tasmania, Jindabyne (New South Wales), and Blue Mountains (New South Wales).
